The transportation system of our bodies is better known as the cardiovascular system and the pump that drives this system is your heart. As one of the most powerful muscles in the body, the heart pumps ten pints of blood through the body with every beat. The cardiovascular system’s function is to move the blood through a system of arteries, veins and capillaries throughout the body supplying the individual cells with nutrients and oxygen and removing the metabolic wastes. In addition to moving the blood through our bodies, this system also keeps our bodies at a constant temperature, maintains fluid balance throughout the tissues, and protects the body from blood loss and infection. The cardiovascular system is made up of two different systems: The first system is the pulmonary circulation which helps the heart pump the blood to our lungs and then back again. Then the second system is the circulatory system, in which the heart pumps the oxygen-rich blood to throughout the rest of our body. It’s amazing how the cardiovascular system works with all of the other systems of our bodies as well. Through these functions, it makes our bodies run like a well oiled machine.
